Why Thermal Insulation?

The term thermal insulation refers to materials used to reduce the rate of heat transfer, or the methods and processes used to reduce heat transfer.

Heat energy is most commonly transferred by conduction, convection and radiation.

Thermal insulation prevents costly energy, in the form of heat, escaping from for example, a steam system or a temperature controlled storage vessel.

Conversely, Thermal insulation prevents heat from entering low temperature systems such as Cryogenic pipe work or Air Conditioning systems.

In other words, Thermal Insulation can keep an enclosed system such as Steam and Condensate pipework hot and operating at optimum temperatures, sometimes greater than plus 200 deg c. Or it can keep a low temperature system such as a Nitrogen feed cold, sometimes to temperatures lower than minus 100 deg c.
